    D2D Data Offloading in Vehicular Environments with Optimal Delivery Time Selection

    Within the framework of a Device-to-Device (D2D) data offloading system for cellular networks, we propose a Content Delivery Management System (CDMS) in which the instant for transmitting a content to a requesting node, through a D2D communication, is selected to minimize the energy consumption required for transmission. The proposed system is particularly fit to highly dynamic scenarios, such as vehicular networks, where the network topology changes at a rate which is comparable with the order of magnitude of the delay tolerance. We present an analytical framework able to predict the system performance, in terms of energy consumption, using tools from the theory of point processes, validating it through simulations, and provide a thorough performance evaluation of the proposed CDMS, in terms of energy consumption and spectrum use. Our performance analysis compares the energy consumption and spectrum use obtained with the proposed scheme with the performance of two benchmark systems. The first one is a plain classic cellular scheme, the second is a D2D data offloading scheme (that we proposed in previous works) in which the D2D transmissions are performed as soon as there is a device with the required content within the maximum D2D transmission range..

In particular, we discuss in detail the case of cylindrically polarized X-waves, both in the paraxial and nonparaxial regime.     Helical axis analysis to quantify humeral kinematics during shoulder rotation.

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Information pertaining to the helical axis during humeral kinematics during shoulder rotation may be of benefit to better understand conditions such as shoulder instability. The aim of this study is to quantify the behavior of humeral rotations using helical axis (HA) parameters in three different conditions. A total of 19 people without shoulder symptoms participated in the experiment. Shoulder kinematics was measured with an optoelectric motion capture system. The subjects performed three different full range rotations of the shoulder. The shoulder movements were analyzed with the HA technique. Four parameters were extracted from the HA of the shoulder during three different full-range rotations: range of movement (RoM), mean angle (MA), axis dispersion (MDD), and distance of their center from the shoulder (D). No significant differences were observed in the RoM for each condition between left and right side. The MA of the axis was significantly lower on the right side compared to the left in each of the three conditions. The MDD was also lower for the right side compared to the left side in each of the three conditions.The four parameters proposed for the analysis of shoulder kinematics showed to be promising indicators of shoulder instability.Peer reviewe

    International audienceIl presente articolo vuole analizzare una fonte inedita conservata all'Archivio di Stato di Bologna, il Liber expensarum del 1288. Nella prima parte del contributo sono state studiate le caratteristiche intrinseche ed estrinseche del documento, che ci hanno permesso di stabilire il suo ruolo tra le scritture contabili del comune. Nella seconda parte invece è stato ricostruito il bilancio del secondo semestre del 1288, e sono state analizzate tutte le voci di spesa pubblica del Liber, allo scopo di comprendere la politica fiscale del comune.This contribution wants to investigate a unpublished source preserved in the Archivio di Stato of Bologna, the Liber expensarum of 1288. In the first part of the contribution were studied the intrinsics and extrinsics characteristics of the document, that give us the possibility to determinate his role between the accounting records of the commune of Bologna. In the second part, the budget of the second half of 1288 was rebuilt and it was studied all items of the Liber to understand the fiscal policy of the town

    Design and Analysis of RT-Ring: A Protocol for Supporting Real-Time Communications

    Distributed applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements are more and more used in several areas (e.g., automated factory networks, embedded systems, conferencing systems). These applications produce a type of traffic with hard timing requirements, i.e., transmissions must be completed within specified deadlines. To handle these transmissions, the communication system must use real-time protocols to provide a communication service that is able to satisfy the QoS requirements of the distributed applications. In this paper, we propose a new real-time protocol, called RT-Ring, able to support transmissions of both real-time and generic traffic over a ring network. RT-Ring provides both network guarantees and high network resource utilization, while ensuring the compatibility with the emerging differentiated service architectures. Network guarantees are fully proved and high network utilization is highlighted by a comparative study with the FDDI protocol. This comparison shows that RT-Ring network capacities are greater than the corresponding FDDI capacities. In fact, by assuming the FDDI frames with a length equal to the RT-Ring slot size and by using the same traffic load we show that the capacities of FDDI are equal to the lower bound capacities of RT-Ring.     SPoT: Representing the Social, Spatial, and Temporal Dimensions of Human Mobility with a Unifying Framework

    Modeling human mobility is crucial in the analysis and simulation of opportunistic networks, where contacts are exploited as opportunities for peer-topeer message forwarding. The current approach with human mobility modeling has been based on continuously modifying models, trying to embed in them the mobility properties (e.g., visiting patterns to locations or specific distributions of inter-contact times) as they came up from trace analysis. As a consequence, with these models it is difficult, if not impossible, to modify the features of mobility or to control the exact shape of mobility metrics (e.g., modifying the distribution of inter-contact times). For these reasons, in this paper we propose a mobility framework rather than a mobility model, with the explicit goal of providing a exible and controllable tool for modeling mathematically and generating simulatively different possible features of human mobility. Our framework, named SPoT, is able to incorporate the three dimensions - spatial, social, and temporal - of human mobility. The way SPoT does it is by mapping the different social communities of the network into different locations, whose members visit with a configurable temporal pattern. In order to characterize the temporal patterns of user visits to locations and the relative positioning of locations based on their shared users, we analyze the traces of real user movements extracted from three location-based online social networks (Gowalla, Foursquare, and Altergeo). We observe that a Bernoulli process effectively approximates user visits to locations in the majority of cases and that locations that share many common users visiting them frequently tend to be located close to each other. In addition, we use these traces to test the exibility of the framework, and we show that SPoT is able to accurately reproduce the mobility behavior observed in traces. Finally, relying on the Bernoulli assumption for arrival processes, we provide a throughout mathematical analysis of the controllability of the framework, deriving the conditions under which heavy-tailed and exponentially-tailed aggregate inter-contact times (often observed in real traces) emerge
